Senator the Hon Jane Hume confirms FASEA extension legislation is on the Senate’s agenda in live FPA webinar

Senator the Hon Jane Hume, Assistant Minister for Superannuation, Financial Services and Financial Technology, joined FPA CEO, Dante De Gori CFP®, in a live webinar on 7 May, to provide FPA members with an update on the current issues in financial planning, the Government’s response to the Financial Services Royal Commission and the future of the financial planning profession.

Senator Hume said she is inspired to see how the advice industry has stepped up during COVID-19 pandemic.

“From the bottom of my heart, I wanted to say thank you because you’ve been fundamental in making sure the Government’s COVID-19 initiatives are running smoothly to help people in time of need. This is our Team Australia moment.”

In response to questions around the future of the financial planning profession in the context of the Royal Commission reforms, Senator Hume confirmed FASEA education requirements are one of the bills that will be addressed in Senate next week.

Further, Senator Hume added that the Government would be considering how the COVID-19 pandemic would affect the implementation of the Hayne Royal Commission recommendations, which were originally due to be introduced by mid-2020.

“We welcome the opportunity to work closely with the Government on how we can achieve our overarching objective to improve access to affordable and professional financial advice,” said FPA CEO Dante De Gori CFP®.

“This is such an important industry and the government recognises the potential value of quality professional financial advice. We want as many Australians as possible to access quality professional advice when they need it the most,” concluded Senator Hume.

The live webinar also covered members’ questions around regulatory reform, the role of technology in the industry, and how industry players like FPA and the Government can work more collaboratively on current issues.

This live interactive conversation marks the first of many new online events to be launched by FPA to help members stay connected and up to date with the latest legislative and regulatory developments. This includes FPA Together, a series of live regional webinars during May designed to help FPA members stay connected with their local FPA community as they hear first-hand from FPA CEO, Dante De Gori CFP® and FPA Chair, Marisa Broome CFP® about how FPA members are responding and adapting to the COVID-19 situation, the latest information on policy and regulatory developments and resources and relief available to FPA members.
