FPA welcomes new Assistant Treasurer

The Financial Planning Association (FPA) has welcomed the appointment of The Hon Kelly O’Dwyer MP as Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Small Business, as well as the elevation of the financial services portfolio to Cabinet in the Coalition Government.

Mark Rantall, CEO of the FPA said Ms O’Dwyer’s previous position of Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer would ensure continuity at a time when the Government was due to implement significant industry reforms.

Ms O’Dwyer brings an understanding of financial services to her role, as well as tremendous capability. We look forward to engaging with Minister O’Dwyer to discuss the importance of raising education and professional standards for financial planners, and working with her to maintain the reform agenda.

The FPA was also pleased to see that the role of Assistant Treasurer, and the financial services portfolio, has been elevated to the Cabinet. It is appropriate that financial services should be a policy priority for the Government, given the significant impact it has on Australians.

“The dual appointment as Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Small Business could provide benefits in relation to understanding the pressures regulations place, particularly on small licensees.

“The FPA thanks The Hon Josh Frydenberg MP for his work and understanding of the financial planning profession during his time as Assistant Treasurer and congratulates him on his appointment as Minister for Resources, Energy and Northern Australia.”
