The 2022 FPA Roadshow Capital City Series took place from 1-10 June

The event was an opportunity to meet at one of five in-person events to reconnect with your peers and your association. The event will award up to 2.5 CPD hours.

Program outline

Session 1:
Update on FPA policy & regulatory insights affecting financial planning, including the Quality of Advice Review and the election outcome
Session 2:
Retirement planning of the future
Morning/Afternoon tea break
Session 3:
Panel discussion addressing PI dilemmas
Session 4
Ethics session on three recent case studies

Q&A session with the FPA

You will be required to attend a minimum of 80% of the morning/afternoon event to be awarded CPD hours.

Speakers

Grant Hackett OAM, Chief Executive Officer of Generation Life

Grant joined the Generation Life Executive Team in September 2017. With over 15 years of experience, Grant has held many senior positions across marketing, distribution and wealth management for Westpac and BT Financial Group.

Grant’s qualifications include an Executive Master of Business Administration with first class honours, a Diploma of Business Law and a Diploma of Financial Services. Prior to his corporate career, Grant was a multiple Olympic champion representing Australia in swimming and has held numerous world records.

David Martin, Director Professional Lines Insurance at AB Phillips

David is an Insurance professional with in-depth exposure to Professional Indemnity, Directors and Officers and Cyber Crime insurance in Australia. His background as an accountant and having established and run his own IT companies, means he has quite the unique perspective on insurance and risk management. His team runs one of Australia’s largest insurance portfolio’s of accountants, Financial Planners, fund managers and other AFSL holders.

David has presented to individual business groups, associations and government agencies on a number of topics especially in the past 5 years. His presentations are entertaining, thought provoking and always specific to the particular industry he is presenting to.

Sarah Abood, Chief Executive Officer of the FPA

Sarah has over 25 years’ experience working in the financial services industry and she is a passionate advocate for financial planning.

Sarah has a deep understanding of the financial planning profession, and the demands of running a financial planning practice. This was gained from her nine years as CEO of Profile Financial Services, a privately-owned and self-licensed financial planning firm and FPA Professional Practice.

Prior to commencing as FPA CEO, Ms Abood held the position of chief operating officer at HOPE Housing Funds Management. She has also worked in senior change and transformation, and marketing roles for some of Australia’s leading financial institutions. Sarah holds a BA from the University of Sydney, an MBA from Macquarie University (MGSM) and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Robert Kimberley, Professional Accountability Manager at FPA

Rob has been working with the FPA since March 2021 and is responsible for delivering the FPA’s professionalism function.

He has over 15 years’ experience in the financial services industry in Australia and internationally, working in both the public and private sectors, for wealth management firms, top tier banking groups and regulatory bodies, specialising in dispute resolution and advice review.

David Sharpe CFP®, Chair of the FPA

David became Chair of the FPA Board in May 2022 after a year as Deputy Chair, and has been a financial planner and FPA member since 2003. He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional, has completed a Diploma in Financial Planning and holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Distinction) from Curtin University. David runs his own self-licensed financial planning firm, Globe Financial Planning, based in West Perth. In 2016 he was shortlisted for the FPA CFP® Professional of the Year Award.

Prior to being elected onto the board David spent four years on the FPA Western Australia Chapter, including two years as Chair. David can often be found in various media roles (TV, radio and print) advocating strongly for the value of advice.

Thomas Cavanagh, Special Counsel at Wotton + Kearney (Perth only)

Thomas works across Wotton + Kearney’s Financial Lines and Subrogation & Recoveries practice groups. He has particular experience in matters relating to professional indemnity, subrogated recoveries and coverage advice in the London and Australian markets. Thomas advises insurers and their insureds on shareholder class actions, regulatory investigations by ASIC and financial services remediation schemes.

Thomas has significant experience acting for financial services providers and their insurers in complaints lodged with the Australian Financial Complainants Authority and regularly assists insurers and their insureds in that jurisdiction.

Susanne Craig, Partner at Wotton + Kearney (Adelaide only)

Suzanne is an experienced financial lines lawyer, handling professional indemnity, management liability and directors and officers’ claims. She assists insurers and their financial institution and professional customers in actions before the courts and with regulatory investigations and enquiries, including by ASIC, the Financial Ombudsman Service and Worksafe Victoria.

Suzanne has developed a niche representing insurers where there are allegations of insolvent trading, civil fraud, crime and breaches of directors’ duties. Her diploma in financial planning means that she brings financial literacy, as well as legal experience, to delivering the best outcome for her clients.

Dean Pinto, Partner at Wotton + Kearney (Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney)

Dean specialises in financial lines products, with a focus on directors & officers, professional indemnity, management liability and coverage in the London and Australian markets.

With extensive experience advising on complex coverage issues and monitoring and advising insurers on strategy to resolve coverage disputes and the underlying litigation or investigation, Dean also has experience investigating, managing and resolving a diverse range of breach of director duties and professional indemnity claims. This experience ranges from defending directors in shareholder oppression claims and not-for-profit organisation disputes, to defending professionals as diverse as real estate agents, art restorers and photometry technicians to mortgage brokers, accountants and financial planners. Dean has also represented directors in ASIC examinations and ICAC investigations.
